In the years that followed, the City churches, together with the rest of the capital would face an even greater foe in the form of the Luftwaffe, but this only strengthened their hold over the national imagination.

If we are looking for a single marker or index, in which are distilled the different stages of Hawksmoor’s neglect and rehabilitation during the course of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, we need look no further than the treatment of his grave. In The Builder, in 1862, under the heading of ‘British Architects: New Materials for Their Lives’, the writer, Peter Cunningham, who had written the first biography of Inigo Jones, described how,

During a year’s residence in St. Alban’s … I have made more than one pleasant pilgrimage to the graves of Hawksmoor and [Edward] Strong, – a pilgrimage, as my readers will see, not unmixed with pain; for the inhabitants of Hertfordshire would seem to care little or nothing about Wren’s assistants or Wren himself.109
